On April 23, the "Scar Treatment and Management Academic Salon" hosted by Bakang Medical was held in Wuhan. The conference gathered experts from multiple disciplines including burn, plastic surgery, dermatology, and traditional Chinese medicine to discuss the development direction of scar treatment.
The conference was chaired by Professor Xie Weiguo, former director of the Burn Department at Wuhan Third Hospital and chief expert of Bakang Medical. In his opening remarks, Professor Xie emphasized: "Scar treatment is a multidisciplinary field involving burns, plastic surgery, dermatology, and other specialties. In the past, each department operated independently. Today, we gather here to break down disciplinary barriers, promote interdisciplinary integration, and provide patients with more systematic and effective treatment." He introduced each of the attending experts and warmly welcomed everyone's presence.

Attending experts: Professor Sun Jiaming from Huazhong University of Science and Technology Union Hospital, Professor Wang Deyun from Wuhan Third Hospital, Professor Song Jiquan from Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University, Professor Wu Min from Tongji Hospital Affiliated to Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Professor Zhang Liang from Wuhan First Hospital, Dr. Zhu Zhigang from Wuhan Third Hospital, Dr. Wang Song from Hubei Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Director Bai Xinping from Wuhan Central Hospital, as well as President Sun Bianyou, founder of Bakang Medical, and heads of various regional branches.
This "Scar Treatment and Management Academic Salon" focused on the comprehensive treatment pathways for keloids and hypertrophic scars. The conference reached a consensus:
Scar treatment requires a multi-technology combined treatment system (surgery/laser/superficial radiotherapy, etc.)
Single treatments have a higher recurrence rate, so a systematic approach must be established
Follow-up management for over two years is a key factor in reducing recurrence
Interdisciplinary collaboration (dermatology, burns, plastic surgery, radiotherapy) is the future direction
[A Consensus: Must Be "Multi-Technology Combined"]
In the academic report session, President Sun Bianyou first shared a presentation titled "Long-termism in Scar Prevention and Treatment—Bakang's Exploration and Practice". Based on Bakang's cumulative follow-up data of over 40,000 cases of keloids, President Sun pointed out that simple excision has a high recurrence rate and that a "multi-technology combined treatment + long-term follow-up management" system must be established. Follow-up should last at least two years to effectively control the risk of recurrence.

Next, Dr. Zhao Mengjie from Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University presented "Optical and Electrical Treatment of Hypertrophic Scars and Keloids", comparing the differences between the two types of scars from a pathological perspective and systematically reviewing the application mechanisms and clinical cases of non-ablative and ablative lasers in different stages of scars. She emphasized that lasers must be part of a comprehensive treatment plan, chosen individually based on the characteristics of the scar, and not used in isolation.
Dr. Zhao Mengjie
Dr. Hou Kai from Tongji Hospital of Huazhong University of Science and Technology presented "Non-Surgical Treatment of Eyelid Scar Contracture", which caught the attention of many doctors. He demonstrated the successful treatment of several severe eyelid contractures after trauma using a combination of composite lasers, subcutaneous dissection, and eyelid traction, effectively restoring the shape and function of the eyelids and avoiding the trauma of traditional surgery. This approach provides a new non-surgical option for eyelid scars.

Following this, Professors Wu Min, Huang Lei, Wang Deyun, Zhu Zhan Yong, and Zhang Liang provided comments on the reports. Professor Wu Min acknowledged Bakang's sense of public responsibility and emphasized the principles of early intervention and comprehensive treatment. Professor Huang Lei raised specific questions: Can early-stage scars be treated with superficial radiotherapy? President Sun responded that while superficial radiotherapy is effective, it is not the first choice and should be used precisely for high-risk patients after surgery or ring drilling. Professor Zhang Liang reviewed his long-standing relationship with Bakang, admiring its efficacy, follow-up system, and public welfare achievements, and noted that the current multidisciplinary scar treatment philosophy is becoming increasingly unified.

[New Technical Highlights]
Ring Drilling, Skin Graft Replantation, and Systematic Follow-Up
The second section of the academic forum was chaired by Professor Wang Deyun. Dr. Zhang Liang, director of Wuhan First Hospital, first shared "Comprehensive Treatment of Hypertrophic Scars". He discussed the evolution of his treatment philosophy—from initially pursuing large-scale excision and suturing to now emphasizing comprehensive treatment. He demonstrated the significant effects of dye lasers on early-stage hypertrophic scars through numerous cases and highlighted the ring drilling technique: minimally invasive, highly efficient, and easy to care for, especially suitable for multiple, high-tension areas of keloids. Combined with superficial radiotherapy, it can achieve a "quick and effective" treatment result.
Director Zhang Liang
Dr. Wang Yong from Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University then presented "Experience with Ring Drilling in Scar Treatment", further expanding the application scenarios of ring drilling—such as unsuitable for large incisions in joint area scars, facial atrophic acne scars (pits), and perioral scars, providing new minimally invasive options for clinicians.
Dr. Wang Yong
Director Li Huijun from Bakang Medical's Wuhan branch presented "Systematic Treatment of Keloids". He pointed out that single treatment methods have a high recurrence rate and must integrate techniques from dermatology, burn surgery, plastic surgery, radiotherapy, and rehabilitation to form a closed loop from classification assessment, individualized comprehensive treatment to long-term follow-up. He introduced Bakang's "full life cycle companionship" management: after each patient's treatment, they enter an active follow-up system for at least two years, using a three-color warning system to identify signs of folliculitis or in situ recurrence early and intervene promptly, thus maintaining a high cure rate.
Director Li Huijun
Dr. Wang Liang from Bakang Medical's Wuhan branch shared an innovative surgical technique—"Scar Skin Graft Replantation", derived from the concept of burn skin grafting, taking split-thickness skin from the excised scar tissue, cutting it into stamp-sized pieces for replantation, replacing traditional large incision suturing or expanders. He believes this method heals quickly, causes minimal damage, and is particularly suitable for large-area keloids that cannot be directly tension-reduced and sutured.
Dr. Wang Liang
In the second round of expert comments, Professor Bai Xinping from Hubei Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine proposed that there may be exploration space for TCM in oral formulations or external treatments for scars. Professor Wang Song from Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University admitted that he gained the most from Director Li Huijun's report, which was the "attention to small lesions around the treatment area during follow-up," a detail often overlooked in public hospitals; he also believed that Bakang's follow-up model is worth emulating.

[Conference Summary]
From "One-Time Treatment" to "Long-Term Management"
In the closing remarks, Professor Xie Weiguo summarized the conference. He stated: "Recent years have seen a leap in scar treatment efficacy, thanks to the core use of superficial radiotherapy in a comprehensive treatment regimen. However, the real progress lies in the shift in mindset—from one-time treatment to long-term management. Today, we see that whether it's surgery, laser, ring drilling, or skin graft replantation, all these technologies must be tied to a long-term follow-up system to truly reduce recurrence rates."

He thanked the experts for their excellent presentations and Bakang Medical for providing this high-level interdisciplinary exchange platform, "Hope that in the future, we can take this salon as a starting point to implement the 'three-tier prevention' and full-cycle management of scars in Hubei and even the Central China region, benefiting more patients."
Professor Xie Weiguo
President Sun Bianyou delivered the closing speech, thanking the experts for sharing their knowledge and especially acknowledging the innovative strength of young doctors. He expressed that Bakang is willing to open up its technology, equipment, and case database for in-depth collaboration with colleagues in research projects and academic exchanges, ultimately making "returning scar patients to a better life" a tangible path.
